Get Your Farm-To-Table on

There’s a buzzword out in the foodie world – farm-to-table. On the surface this seems like a trend, but we’re thinking it’s here to stay. And we certainly hope people continue to get on board.
The term farm-to-table applies to food purchased directly from the source. Which means whatever you’re eating was harvested, stored, packaged and sold locally. Sure, it requires a little extra effort, but buying locally ensures your food is fresh. Plus, getting involved in the farm-to-table movement is easier than you think.

VISIT YOUR LOCAL FARM

The best way to be 100% certain where your food comes from is to get it from the people who grow it. Besides offering the freshest food, visiting a local farm means you are directly involved in helping your community thrive. Take a trip to LocalHarvest to find a farm near you.

GO TO LOCAL FARMER’S MARKETS

If you can’t quite get to the farm, the farm can meet you halfway. A farmer’s market is the best way to shop for all things seasonal. In fact, going to one might even broaden your palate’s horizons with fruits and vegetables you didn't know existed. Find a local farmer’s market on LocalHarvest or create a farmer’s market where there isn’t one yet through Farmigo.

GROW YOUR OWN

If you feel like flexing that green thumb, your yard could easily double as a hyper-local farm. Growing your own fruits and vegetables is healthier for you, your family and your bank account.

JOIN A FOOD CO-OP

Let’s say you don’t live close enough to a farm to make frequent trips. Maybe you don’t have space to grow your own produce. Food co-ops are perfect for you. They basically function like a middleman between you and farmers. Now, they’re a little different than farmer’s markets in that you pay to become a member, but you get fresh produce delivered to your door (or to the co-op location.)

If you’re aiming to eat as fresh as humanly possible, the farm-to-table movement is something you might want to jump on. And to anyone out there with other bright ideas, feel free to share with the group.
