In honor of grilling season, we’ve invited some new faces and old friends into Food Friendzy today. These ingredients aren’t burgers or chicken or corn on the cob or any of the usual backyard barbecue suspects, though. Our featured ingredients are quickly winning space on the grill and in the hearts of our little taste buds, thanks to their full, grilled flavor. They can also shake up your diet routine without throwing you off track:
Romaine – If you only ever think of Romaine as a salad bed for other bright and beautiful toppings, she is about to blow your mind. She’s beginning to step out for a little pre-salad grill now and then, and it’s earning her a whole new devoted following. Her leafy greens are loaded with fiber and vitamin A for helping to maintain a healthy weight and strong eyesight. Slice Romaine in half, brush with a little olive oil, season with some pepper, and then grill for a whole new take on salad this summer.
Watermelon – Sure, summer often brings to mind images of kids on front stoops relishing a pink and juicy Watermelon, but how often do you see her with grill marks? Like with other fruits, the heat of the grill can amplify the sweet flavor of Watermelon and add an unexpected twist that can take it from a run-of-the-mill to a must-have ingredient. Grill and enjoy her on her own, sliced over greens with a soft cheese and tangy dressing, or a use her as a sweet addition to homemade ice cream or a dollop of fresh whipped cream.
Tomato – It’s hard to imagine there was ever a time in history when we didn’t want to cook with this girl, especially when we’re introduced to her grilled. Pluck some large Tomatoes from the garden or market bin and prepare her, like Romaine, or toss small Tomatoes over the flames in a grill basket. Enjoy her on her own, adorning main dishes, or tossed in salads throughout the summer months and beyond.
Avocado – You may be shaking your head at this one, but trust us. You think he’s good in guacamole? We don’t even have words for the creamy goodness that is grilled Avocado. He still has all that vitamin E and those healthy fats, plus a flavor that will make you feel like you’re cheating on your diet foods.
Clams – Looking for a little lean protein besides the usual burgers or chicken? Clam is the guy for you! He’s packed with protein, low in calories, and a good way to get some extra iron. On top of all that, he’s super easy to grill for a tasty meal al fresco. Pop him on the hot grill and wait for him to open up, and then add your favorite flavors, like lemon, garlic, herbs, and even onion—then enjoy!
Banana – Sweet, creamy and completely indulgent… this one must be bad for you right? Not a chance. Slice, season with a little antioxidant-rich cinnamon, and grill Banana for a warm, decadent, and totally diet-friendly dessert full of potassium. Or put a new twist on lunch by pairing her with a little nut butter on whole grain bread. Who says eating healthy has to be boring or without flavor?
