In a move that proves there’s way more to LA’s health movement than juiced kale, the Los Angeles city council has declared a resolution urging Angelinos to refrain from eating meat one day of the week.
They’re calling it Meatless Monday and we here at Bolthouse Farms are calling it a pretty great idea.
The measure isn’t enforceable by law. There won’t be police officers at the school cafeteria checking lunchboxes. But there is a clear message here – Los Angeles is serious about ensuring healthier eating habits for its citizens. Reducing, not necessarily eliminating, meat intake has a lot of benefits, not the least of which is protecting your heart.
Councilwoman Jan Perry, who has called for a ban on new fast-food restaurants in South Los Angeles, says, “We can reduce saturated fats and reduce the risk of heart disease by 19 percent.” Sounds like a great cause to us.
Meatless Monday is a symbolic gesture that will get people to think about the food choices they make, which is a very important first step on the road to getting healthy and staying there.
This is clearly a city council after our own heart. Well done, Los Angeles.
What do you think? What kind of food day would you declare?
