Are Healthy Snacks Playing Hooky From High Schools?

Take a second and think back to the school lunches you enjoyed as a kid. There were tater tots. There was chocolate milk. There was square pizza. And the only thing your young taste buds knew was that it tasted good. Today, a ton of attention is being placed on making sure that pizza and tater tots aren’t the major players in the cafeteria. But it looks like high schools are missing out on the makeover.

The breakthroughs made by School Lunch Reform Movements are amazing. They’ve set new standards in place we’d have never thought possible 15 years ago. But there’s one down side. According to data released by the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, high schools have yet to benefit from change on a mass scale. While kids in elementary schools are enjoying meals with more whole grains, and more fruits and veggies, the majority of secondary schools don’t even sell fruits or vegetables on campus.
School lunch reform is a huge undertaking. And large-scale change won’t happen overnight. But the truth is that kids consume up to half of their daily calories at school. Making the simple act of swapping one bag of chips per day for low-fat yogurt or an apple to help kids live healthier is more important than ever.

Take action now by signing the petition and joining efforts to ensure all children have access to healthy food at school.
Don’t be afraid to share the message with friends and family. We’re all in this together.
