Eating Healthy on the GO!

So the other night I was asked a very good question. What do you eat that is healthy at the nearest bodega or corner Korean deli?  I am part of a mastermind group that meets Mondays at 6:30pm, and 5 out of the 7 women said that they are always on the go and wanted to know what they could eat that was healthy at these places. “Well,” I said, “this isn’t an easy thing. At a bodega I would grab a bag of raisins, walnuts and almonds. They have protein and some vitamins. That’s about it at a bodega. Maybe a dark chocolate bar, because it gives you instant energy and chocolate makes you feel good. At the Korean delis, I would not eat what’s in the salad or hot food bars unless you just do the plain lettuce and carrots. That food has been sitting there a long time and may have some bacteria in it. Grab a piece of fruit instead (an apple or a banana perhaps). Even sun chips aren’t so bad for you.”

What you have to realize is that taking care of yourself and your energy requires attention and focus just like anything else in life. So in the morning before you leave the house, take a couple of minutes and prepare a sandwich. You can also cut up an apple and have some almonds, nuts and cranberries to throw into a little plastic baggy. Preparing this way for your life will save you time, energy and money. Once you get in this habit, it gets really easy and you’ll be thrilled knowing you can reach in your bag and pull out a great turkey sandwich on whole wheat and a sliced apple. And there you go: you have a healthy, balanced meal giving you the energy you need.

By taking time to go grocery shopping once a week, you will see how your entire life will become more in balance. You won’t spend as much money as you would if you were eating out or grabbing food from the bodegas. You will feel better and I bet you might even lose some weight by being prepared, organized and showing up for your life.

Healthy food doesn’t have to be boring. There’s a wide variety of healthy food to choose from. Healthy fresh fruits, vegetables of all sorts, nuts, goji berries, lean cuts of meat (turkey, fish, chicken), hard cheeses (jarlsberg, havarti, smoked gouda), hard boiled eggs (my favorite and the easiest of all) and all natural peanut or almond butter are just a few examples.
Those are my answers to eating healthy on the go. Have FUN with healthy food and get creative. I hope this helps.

Be Well…
