The Secret Benefits of Sweet Potato

Move-It Monday: The Secret Benefits of Sweet Potato

Here are just a few of their secret benefits:

1.) Controlling appetite: Sweet potatoes are a great source of fiber, which means they help you feel fuller, longer.  One sweet potato has 4 grams or about 15% of your daily value of fiber!

2.) Heart healthy: According to Natural News, sweet potatoes “contain a large amount of vitamin B6. This vitamin is crucial in breaking down a substance called homocysteine, which contributes to hardening of the arteries and blood vessels.”  They’re also full of potassium, which can help lower your blood pressure by getting rid of extra sodium in the body and regulating fluid balance.  Amazing!

3.) Cancer-fighting:  Ever heard of beta-carotene?  It’s the carotenoid and antioxidant that gives veggies like sweet potatoes and carrots their rich, reddish-orange color. Your body converts it to vitamin A, where it helps get rid of cancer-friendly free radicals – some studies have shown that those who consume at least four daily servings of beta-carotene rich fruits and veggies have a lower risk of developing cancer or heart disease. Beta-carotenes also protect your skin from UV exposure, and support the health of your skin, vision and immune system.

4.) Prevent sugar cravings: Sugar cravings, begone! According to FitSugar, “sweet potatoes have a relatively low glycemic index rating (50), which can also help prevent blood sugar spikes after you eat. Regulated blood sugar levels can help get rid of those sugary cravings you get when your levels dip.”  Just make sure you are steaming or boiling them – roasting and frying them can destroy some of these properties.

5.) Beauty-boosting: If all that wasn’t enough, sweet potatoes are also full of vitamins C and E, which play a huge role in the health of your hair and skin.  So if you want shiny hair and glowing skin, make sure to stock up on this beauty food!
