Now What?
Summer means an endless bounty of beautiful fruits. But after a successful trip to a local farmer’s market, the older produce gets pushed to the back of the fridge. We just hate to see anything go to waste, so here are some tips and tricks!
While the fruit may no longer look pretty, they can still be yummy!
Lots of older—not rotten—fruits can make a great smoothie. Craft your own recipe by blending up berries, bananas, or whatever is left in the fridge. Bring mushy bananas back to life by whipping up banana bread for a sweet treat. Apple sauce is a tasty snack that’s easy to make. Unwanted apples will no longer end up in a compost pile. If you like to take risks in the kitchen, older berries make delicious fruit leathers. While it may take some time, it’s sure worth the reward. Have your grapes shriveled? Lay them out in the sun and let nature do its work. Soon enough you’ll have raisins!
Lemon, limes, and oranges are great when fresh. Before tossing your unused citrus, be sure to zest and juice them to brighten up a future dish. Juice, jar and freeze a lemon or lime. Dry and then store the zest in a jar to save for your next meal. Don’t forget your summer stone fruits: peaches, plums, apricots and cherries. If they are too ripe, turn these forgotten fruits into a jam to be enjoyed for months to come. (Most jam recipes call for lemon juice, so don’t forget to use what you’ve saved!)
For the produce long gone, start a compost pile and send those unused nutrients right back into the earth. But don’t forget to tend to it, or you will have one stinky mess! Also, remember to check your fridge to take inventory before you head to the store, sometimes food is hidden in the back. That way you can cut back on any waste!
