Focused Meditation

You might wish to spend time in quiet contemplation today. By focusing your mind through mediation, you could find it easier to look within and experience the tranquility that comes from unplugging from the rest of the world. Perhaps you can find a place where you will not be interrupted and bring your attention to your breath. If you have a regular meditation practice, this would be a good time to continue delving into it even more deeply. If you do not have a meditation practice, you can work on focusing your mind by using the basic Zen practice of counting each inhalation from one to 10. This form of meditation helps you become more conscious of your breathing and gives your mind a point of concentration on which to rest. Doing this may bring you greater peace of mind today.

Focused meditation is a way to both calm and bring clarity to our minds. It is common for our minds to wander while meditating, carrying us on a mental journey away from the rhythmic flow of our breath. Counting our breaths or finding a point of concentration on our bodies, however, helps our minds find a place to rest. Through such a practice, you will become more aware of the nature of your mind today, and instead of letting your mind divert you or draw you in, you will learn to let go and simply see your thoughts as they arise and pass.
