Pretty standard chat from a fitness professional don’t you think?
We all love exercise, thats why we do what we do isn’t it?
Well the truth is that, pretty often (ok most of the time) I actually really don’t like the thought of going to the gym, there always seems to be something more important to do.
Does anyone else get that?
Its such a waste of time – 2 hours out of the day once I have travelled there, changed, warmed up, worked out, stretched, changed and travelled home again. I just don’t have the time.
And then there is working out at home – oh, what a bore!
Its such a hassle to get equipment out, to get changed so I don’t stretch my good clothes and find a good workout to do. And it seems pointless sometimes anyway. I mean how much am I really going to get out of an at-home session anyway?
Which, for me, only leaves running outside, which of course I generally don’t want to do either!
I can always think of why I should be resting my legs, or not getting cold. Or why its a better idea to wait until a better time when it is drier, less icy, cooler, less sunny, later, earlier, brighter, lighter…. There are a million and one reasons why running is bad and I know them all!
So I don’t love exercise after all. I actually secretly don’t want to do it! – just like most people. I wish I didn’t have to workout – oh yes, I long for that magic pill. (You know the one that gives you fabulous strength and fitness for everything life throws at you, a beautiful body to be proud of everyday, and a long healthy life, free of disease and dark feelings)
And thats when it always hits me – I have the magic pill.
We all have the magic pill.
We just can’t seem to see it most of the time. Whats wrong with us?!
I mean come on – we all have to exercise. Its what our bodies were made for. This clever, efficient, glorious machine that we live in wasn’t made to sit still all day, merely a transporter for the brain.
No, no, no – it was made to move. Gracefully, with strength, poise and balance.
This body that we live in can do amazing things. It can run, jump, hop, dance and climb mountains. It can take us to new places, allow interactions and experiences, protect us from harm and supply endless self worth and inner confidence. It is our best friend and our protector. We feed it, rest it, clothe it and care for it but so many of us are not giving our bodies what it needs
MOVEMENT.
Simple movement.
And that I think is the key to my overcoming the negative feelings towards exercise and working out. Just the simple act of remembering how good it is and communicating that to myself, with encouraging words.
These words are my positive affirmations, my self-talk, my friendly inner voices. I have come to love these words – which is lucky because I have to use them every day some weeks!
Here are 6 positive affirmations that I used with myself last week (it was a bad week, ok)
he he, bet you didn’t think I struggle with motivation!
Oh – I DO!
And I think maybe we all do, in different ways…
What are your encouraging words? What speaks to you?
This week, take the time to create your own so that your inner voice always has something positive to say about exercise.
Make an effort to recognise good feelings and positive thoughts and save them for use later. Because you KNOW when you get into it and feel how happy your body is and then experience the wonderful endorphines – you KNOW you will love it!
I warn you tho – I may steal some of your positive encouraging words for myself
