Crushin' on Cranberries

Getting to know one of the season's sexiest fruits

Crushin' on Cranberries

Cranberries.

They make a cameo around this time of year in fruitcakes (thanks Grandma!), Christmas tree garlands and plopped into champagne flutes for some colorful flair. And while we all know you can ward off a UTI with the juice (or preferably mix up a stiff Cape Cod), what else are they good for?

Nature's Antibiotic

Let’s not beat around the bush. We all know the downside of taking prescription antibiotics: increase of antibiotic immune bacteria, decrease in intestinal flora, increased chances of nasty yeast infections and, of course, the costly, time-consuming trip to the doctor’s office. Studies show that regular consumption of cranberry juice may help avoid all of that. Many studies have shown that bladder infections can be treated faster and more effectively with a little C-juice than a bottle of pills. We'll drink to that.

Kickin' Cholesterol Ass

Because they contain flavanoids, these tart little bitches help reduce the amount of bad cholesterol clogging your arteries while increasing the level of good cholesterol. That doesn’t mean you can offset greasy happy hour grub with a cosmopolitan, but it does mean you should consider adding these beauts to your diet.

Other Health Benefits

The good news doesn’t stop there, my lovelies.  Cranberries have also been associated with decreased production of cavities, plaque-producing bacteria in your mouth and the bacteria associated with peptic stomach ulcers. Fresher breath, fewer cavities and less tummy issues? What’s not to love? Put down the Tums and the Tic Tacs and pop a mouthful of berries instead.

How to Eat 'Em

I know some of you princesses have a sweet tooth (this girl included), and may not like the tart taste of cranberries on their own. Luckily, you have options:

-Sprinkle your salad with dried cranberries. The tartness can replace the vinegar, so you need only olive oil and seasoning
-Drink a mixture of unsweetened cranberry juice with a sweeter juice, like orange or apple
-Use sweetened dried cranberries in place of raisins in baked goods or on your oatmeal

If all else fails, make that drink. Everything tastes better with vodka.
